PILSEN PANEL: A TASTE OF MALT MASTERY IN SPOKANE

By Adam Hieronymus

Last month, Territory Manager Adam Hieronymus hosted a Pilsen Malt Sensory Panel in Spokane, Washington. This event, held in the inviting taproom of Brick West Brewing, brought together brewers from Uprise Brewing, Lumberbeard Brewing, YaYa Brewing Co., Bellwether Brewing Company, and Vantage Point Brewing for an in-depth exploration of malt quality and characteristics.

Malt sensory panels are a cornerstone of brewing innovation. By evaluating malt’s aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, and color, brewers and maltsters gain critical insights into the ingredients that form the foundation of their craft.

The Spokane panel trialed six exceptional malts from our portfolio:

  • Great Western Malting Pure Idaho Malt – 100% Idaho-grown barley. This unique pilsner malt is fully modified and gently dried. It contributes a light color and balanced flavor profile designed to be at the heart of your craft.
  • Canada Malting Co. Superior Pilsen Malt – Produced from hand-selected lots of low protein, premium, Canadian grown barley, this Superior Pilsen is a clean malt, without the grassy Sulphur notes common with European Pilsen malts.
  • Canada Malting Co. Euro-Pils – Euro-Pils has wonderful biscuity notes that accent the subtle grassy undertones, making this malt perfectly suited for all of your finest brews.
  • Durst Malz Pilsen (new!) – Due to its high enzyme power, this malt serves as a perfect base malt. It is mainly used for the production of pale beers such as Pilsner and provides a good basis for a clear, golden colour and a balanced body.
  • BestMalz Pilsen – This enzyme-strong and extract-rich malt can be used for all kinds of exceptional and great tasting beers.
  • Pink Boots Malt – The 2024 Pink Boots Malt features the Odyssey barley variety grown across the Pacific Northwest. Originally from the UK, Odyssey is a well-established variety perfect for creating a well-balanced, low color malt. Its unique characteristics have helped to produce a low-GN, high extract Pilsen-style malt product, appropriate for a range of beer and whiskey styles.
