DOMESTIC (M)ALTERNATIVES
By Abi ConnerAt Country Malt Group, we pride ourselves on being your one stop shop for all things brewing as well as your partner in success. Right now, we understand that breweries are facing the impacts of inflation and that cost efficiency has become a top priority for many. With the increase in cost for import malt products, CMG is here to provide some potential domestic malt alternatives, without sacrificing quality or character. We’ll continue to provide you with helpful resources, solutions, and tools so that you can focus on your craft.
Read on to learn more about our favorite domestic malt products and their benefits.
From Canada Malting Co.
First up is Canada Malting Co.’s Euro-Pils malt. Proving to have the same, if not better, efficiency than your standard European pilsner malt, this alternative is sure to bring a smile to your brewery budget AND to your lager drinker’s face. Euro-Pils has almost an identical SRM and even less DMS finish, making your brews crisper and cleaner. For lagers that rely a bit more on a maltier backbone, throw in a little biscuit malt or brew with a blend.
Speaking of maltier backbones, we recommend trying Canada Malting Co.’s Superior Pale Ale malt in place of standard English Ale malts. With the same bready, biscuity flavour, you can use it in your favourite ale recipes for a perfect mouthfeel and body. Superior Pale Ale malt has low gravity and viscosity, keeping your brewhouse efficient and your beers consistent.
From Great Western Malting
To build better foam, mouthfeel, and head retention on your beers, we suggest you try Great Western Malting’s Dextra-Pils® as an alternative to import dextrin malts. No need to worry about regional contributions to flavor profile, Dextra-Pils® will do the work without changing what it’s meant to do. Many have noted a match in SRM (-1.5) but if you prefer a darker color, simply add a bit of darker malt without any impact to body.
With Märzens and Oktoberfests hitting the tanks soon, we recommend Great Western Malting’s Light Munich malt as a substitute to your traditional German Munich malts. Light Munich is gently kilned and adds a balanced sweetness with cracker and bread flavors. A perfect complement when you want to add malty complexity and a hint of gold to your beer.
