ACROSS THE POND WITH THOMAS FAWCETT & SONS: A LEGACY OF CRAFT MALT
By Hailey Thrash-NelsonAt Country Malt Group, we’re honored to bring brewers and distillers in North America the renowned malts of Thomas Fawcett & Sons Ltd. This eighth-generation family business has been producing quality malts for over 200 years on its original site in Castleford, Yorkshire, UK. Combining heritage with innovation, Thomas Fawcett & Sons is known for its dedication to traditional methods and commitment to quality, producing everything from vibrant coloured malts to richly flavoured roasted varieties. Their production facilities include everything from historic floor maltings to cutting-edge Germinating Kilning Vessels (GKVs), providing customers with the best of both worlds in terms of quality and consistency.
Earlier this fall, one of our customers, Bunker Brewing from Maine, had an unforgettable UK adventure to visit Thomas Fawcett & Sons at their source. James Fawcett, who represents the latest generation of this esteemed malting family, gave them a full tour of the facility, sharing the intricacies behind their small-batch approach. The team at Bunker Brewing loved the chance to walk through the ancient maltings in Castleford, bringing new appreciation for the history and craftsmanship that goes into every batch.
Back on this side of the Atlantic, James Fawcett recently made a special visit to British Columbia for the BC Craft Brewers Awards and the Canadian Beer Cup. Our Territory Manager, Heather Jerred, organized a “Meet the Maltster” event at Parallel 49 Brewing in Vancouver, where brewers had the chance to meet James, hear about his family’s malting process, and gain insights into the unique qualities of Fawcett Malts. While in BC, he also made surprise visits to Shaketown Brewing, Bridge Brewing, Central City Brewing, North Point Brewing, and Strange Fellows Brewing.
