For the first time in over 52 years, the U.S. Government has officially added a new type of whiskey to its regulations: American Single Malt Whiskey. This is a groundbreaking moment for distillers, enthusiasts, and whiskey lovers everywhere.
On December 18th, 2024, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) announced the ratification of the Standard of Identity for American Single Malt Whiskey. These new regulations took effect on January 19th, 2025, providing a clear definition for the category and ensuring its authenticity, integrity, and protection.
The new standard solidifies what many distillers have long been crafting with passion: whiskey made entirely from malted barley, distilled at a single U.S. distillery, and aged in oak barrels. This moment is a victory for the dedicated producers who have championed this unique and distinctly American style of whiskey, blending tradition with innovation to create something truly special.
